The National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings was established by virtue of the Combating Trafficking in Human Beings Act. It determines and administers the implementation of the national policy and strategy in the area of combating trafficking in human beings. The National Commission under the Council of Ministers organises and coordinates the interaction between separate institutions and organisations executing the Combating Trafficking in Human Beings Act. It works to prevent trafficking in human beings and to protect, assist and reintegrate victims of trafficking.

The National Commission develops annually a National Programme for Prevention and Counteraction of Trafficking in Human Beings and Protection of the Victims, which is approved by the Council of Ministers. It researches, analyses and reports statistical data on human trafficking. It carries out information, awareness and education campaigns aimed at potential victims of trafficking. It manages and supervises the activities of the Local Commissions for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and the centres for protection and support of victims of trafficking. It also contributes to international cooperation for prevention and counteraction of human trafficking.

Krasimir Karakatschanov
Deputy Prime Minister of Public Order and Security, Minister of Defense and Chairperson of the National Commission for Combating trafficking in Human Beings. Born 29 March 1965 in Ruse. In 1990 he graduates as a Master of History at Sofia University „St. Kliment Ohridski“. He specialized in New Bulgarian History, Political History of the Balkans, National Liberation Movement in Macedonia and Thrace, Political Movements in Bulgaria. He has also completed three-month training in Switzerland. Since 2014, he is a PhD in International Law and International Relations. He is a member of the Macedonian Research Institute – Sofia. An author of articles in historical publications and numerous publications in the Bulgarian periodical press, which are related to the national liberation struggles of the Bulgarians in Macedonia and the contemporary relations between Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia. He is the author of the book – “IMRO – 110 years of fight”. He was also a director of the weekly newspaper „Macedonia“, which is spread in Sofia. In 1998 became a graduate of the first course of the School of Politics in Moscow, Russia and Strasbourg, France. He is a chairperson of the IMRO – Bulgarian national movement. He was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 38th, 40th, 43rd and 44th National Assembly, and in the 44th National Assembly he is also its deputy chairman. He is also elected as a Deputy Prime Minister of Public Order and Security and Minister of Defense on 4.05.2017 from the 44th National Assembly.
