OVERVIEW

The victims of trafficking in human beings for the period between 1 January 2009 to 31 August 2009 is represented by the statistical data below:
Total victims – 137

Women – 122
– Sexual exploitation – 106
– Forced labour – 12

Men – 15

Minors (of whom all are girls) – 20

Pregnant women – 4

Pre-trial proceedings for trafficking in human beings for the period between 1 January 2009 to 31 August 2009:
Newly-formed pre-trial proceedings – 84
– For trafficking for sexual exploitation – 72
– For trafficking for labour exploitation – 5
– For trafficking for forced obedience – 1
– For trafficking of pregnant women for the purpose of selling the newborn – 6

Convictions for the period between 1 January 2009 to 31 August 2009:
Total number of convictions: 74
– Persons convicted of domestic traffic with purpose of sexual exploitation – 45
– Persons convicted of external traffic for the purpose sexual exploitation – 19
– Persons convicted of external traffic for the purpose labor exploitation – 1
– Persons convicted of using a victim of traffic – 6
– Persons convicted by a judgment which has the force of res judicata – 70

The development of the National Mechanism for Referral and Support of Trafficked Persons was also underway in 2009, with regular meetings of the operational and regular working groups on its creation. In addition to this, other activities related to the institutional development and improvement of institutions and organisations working on combating trafficking in persons included meetings of the International Donor Coordination Group for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, and participation in working groups on updating the Coordination Mechanism for Referral of Cases of Unaccompanied Bulgarian Children – Victims of Trafficking.
